If you’ve already checked out our Nexus 5X camera review, nothing much has changed jumping to the larger, crisper display of the 6P, at least when it comes to the camera’s interface.Ħ.0 Marshmallow keeps things tidy, as have previous incarnations of stock Android camera interface but it weaves in a more current aesthetic clear, minimalist iconography for primary functions like switching between the front and rear cameras as well as a simple swipe gesture in place when jumping from shooting stills to shooting video. As well as being the first offering for a Chinese smartphone maker as part of the Nexus program, the 6P shares its camera with its launch partner the 5X and both phones have been putting on a really good show thus far. With the new Huawei-made Nexus 6P things are a little different. Shots from the Motorola-made smartphone weren’t bad, but didn’t really impress either, particularly when set alongside flagship phones of the time. Last year’s Nexus 6 was a beast of a phone, predominantly based on the fact that it was just so damn big (packing a huge 5.96-inch display), however despite also featuring a large 13-megapixel camera, it under-delivered on the imaging side. These instances were the minority, however, and in general the 6P’s autofocus was accurate, and particularly so in low light, where we found it very stable.Google’s new premium Nexus, the Huawei-made 6P packs a serious camera and we decided to see what it’s capable of. The shutter was also occasionally triggered before autofocus had fully locked on, resulting in some out-of-focus exposures. Some instability occurred in very bright light, with autofocus hunting observed in both the macro and infinity positions.
We found the Nexus 6P’s laser autofocus system to be fast and accurate under both bright and low lighting conditions.

On the plus side, however, when mixing flash with a tungsten light source, white balance remains accurate and colors remain pleasant. Although this is less of a problem when mixing flash with ambient light sources, the corners are still a little darker than we’d prefer. The flash is well-centered, but when used as the only light source, light drops off noticeably in the corners. Good detail preservation continues when using the LED flash indoors. This could lead also to some irregularities in exposure, color and texture across consecutive images shot under low light. However, it causes some artifacts as it cannot be activated after a high number of shot in rapid succession.

This software mode turns into a very efficient TNR algorithm in lowlight. These exceptional results were achieved thanks to the HDR+ mode activation for lowlight shot. Images captured under low light conditions on Google’s latest device recorded some of the finest detail we’ve observed from a Smartphone to date for such lighting condition. The Nexus 6P really excelled for detail preservation on images shot both indoors and outdoors. Some exposure failures did occur when shooting high-dynamic scenes, resulting in the loss of detail in the very brightest parts of a scene. Images from Nexus 6P are for the most part well-exposed, with accurate white balance and pleasant colors, particularly when shooting outdoors. Samsung’s S6 Edge continues to lead the way in first place with 86 points overall, with LG’s G4 just behind the Google Nexus 6P in third place with 83 points.
